Are electric toothbrushes more efficient than the manual ones?
The first electric toothbrush was created 40 years ago with the purpose of faster and more efficient cleaning.
Scientific studies revealed that the first generation electric toothbrushes were not that superior to the conventional ones.
Since the 90s the diversity of the modern electric toothbrushes grew up to the point where today there are two types of electric brushes: with a round head and sonic ones.
The round headed brushes combine the giromatic movement with pulsatory high frequency movement with a 3D effect and thus ensuring a high efficiency in cleaning.
Regarding sonic brushes, it is the amplitude of the movement that is very important; it has to be around 3-4 mm.
Advantages and disadvantages
The round-head brushes were built to copy the professional brushes used in dental offices during profylactis treatment. The advantage of these brushes is that the small size of the head is able to reach the less accessible zones, but it requires great skills in manipulation. Every tooth must be separately brushed on all surfaces up to the gingival edge. The head of the toothbrush must reach the interdental spaces too, without putting tension on the tissues.
Sonic brushes are easier to use. They are placed on the tooth surface in an angle of 45 degrees, in order for the bristles to be oriented towards the gingival edge. The advantage is that they clean a larger surface than the round-head brushes. The sonic waves produce the ideal amplitude of the hairs and these begin an active removal of the plaque and the result is perffect brushing.
Which toothbrush is better?
Many clinical studies have demonstrated that both round-head brushes and sonic ones are by far superior to the conventional manual toothbrushes.
The round-head toothbrush is recommended to people that have a good dexterity and are very motivated in keeping a healthy oral hygene.
The sonic ones are easier to use and are recommended to everyone: children and adults.
When choosing an electric brush you should take into considereation the ones with timer (an efficient brushing lasts minimum 2 minutes). The most important features in an electric brush are the frequency, the vibration and the amplitude. The brushes that use batteries have lower power than the ones with charger.
If you take into consideration our advice and you mentain a rigorous programme, your oral hygene will improve dramatically.
